Flannel Activity: Polar Bear’s Underwear

Based off the book Polar Bear's Underwear by Tupera Tupera

We get Polar Bear dressed for the day with all his clothes starting with his underwear.

Then I hand out Polar Bear's laundry for the kids to help me sort. I have socks, pants, shirts, and of course, underwear.

Then I'll call out an item of clothing and if the kids have that item they can come put it on the flannel board.

At the end, we count how many of each item we have and discuss which one we have the most and least of.

Flannel Rhyme: 5 Little Turkeys

Rhyme:

Five turkeys were getting quite nervous.
Thanksgiving Day soon would be back.
So one turkey put on a duck suit,
And now he says, “Gobble, quack, quack!”

Four turkeys were getting quite nervous,
Thanksgiving was coming, not going.
So one little turkey put on a pig suit,
And now he says ‘gobble, oink, oink.’
(Who knew there is officially no rhyme for oink!)

Three turkeys were getting quite nervous,
Thanksgiving was in just a week.
So one turkey put on a mouse suit,
And now he says ‘gobble, squeak, squeak.

Two turkeys were getting quite nervous,
But one said ‘I know what to do!’
So that turkey put on a cow suit,
And now he says ‘gobble, moo, moo.’

One turkey was getting quite nervous,
He  said, I can’t take any more!
So that turkey put on a lion suit
And now he says ‘gobble, roar, roar!’

Flannel Song: Weather

Song (tune of Clementine):

What's the weather, what's the weather
What's the weather like today?
Is it sunny, is it windy,
is it rainy out today?

Flannel Story: Pete the Cat and his 4 Candy Buttons

Based on Miss Sarah's Storytime's Ginger Pete

It was almost Valentine's day. Pete decided to dress up for the occasion by wearing his four candy buttons. Pete loved the candy buttons so much that he started singing:
My buttons, my buttons,
I love my candy buttons!

But, those buttons looked so tasty.  And, I really love candy...so...I ate one!

Did Pete cry?  Goodness no!  Candy buttons come  and candy buttons go. How many buttons did Pete have left? Three! But, I'm still kind of hungry and those buttons look SOOOO tasty, I'll just eat one more.

And so the story will go. Once all the buttons on the shirt are gone, I remind the kids that Pete still has one button left... and if they know the original story they'll know it's his BELLY BUTTON! So I lift Pete's shirt and show his belly button and we sing:

My button, my button,
Still have my belly button.

Flannel Activity: Clifford’s Bone

Clifford's bone is missing! Can you check the dog houses and find it?

“Clifford, Clifford, where is your bone?  Did someone put it in your [green] home?”

Activity: Rhyming Green Eggs

This is an activity perfect for any Dr. Seuss storytime.

Flannel Activity: Where’s Wiggleworm?

Another fun guessing activity. I hide the worm and the kids guess which book he's in.

Wiggle worm, wiggle worm,
hiding in a book.
Wiggle worm, wiggle worm,
where should we look?

Flannel Activity: Where’s the Pea?

This is a fun guessing game. I hide the pea behind one of the layers of the bed and the kids have to guess where it is.

Perfect for fairytale themed storytimes!

Flannel Story: Chocolate Chip Ghost

Once upon a time there were 5 little, friendly ghosts. One day their
mommy needed to go to the store to buy milk. She told her
ghost children not to eat or drink anything until she came back home.

The first little ghost was hungry and decided to taste a small bite of a
carrot. Guess what happened? He turned into an orange ghost.

The second little ghost just wanted to nibble on a strawberry. Guess what? This little ghost turned red.

The third little ghost was also getting hungry and decided to snack on
a pickle. Guess what? This ghost turned completely green.

The fourth little ghost took a tiny sip of some grape juice. I bet you
know what happened. Yes! The ghost turned purple.

The fifth little ghost saw what happened to his brothers and sisters. He
looked into the freezer and found some chocolate chip ice cream. He only wanted a tiny spoonful and guess what?
In the afternoon their mommy came home from the store. The mommy ghost could not believe her eyes! How am I going to get you white in time for Halloween? She called the ghost doctor. The doctor told her to put her little ghosts to bed an feed them ONLY white foods.

Finally, the ghost children were happy and they were all white again.

Now they are ready for Halloween night.

Flannel: Fish

Rhyme: “Five Little Fishes”

Five little fish swimming by the shore
One got caught then there were four
Four little fish swimming in the sea
One got caught then there were three
Three little fish swimming in the blue
One got caught then there were two
Two little fish swimming in the sun
One got caught then there was one
One little fish swimming straight for home
Decided he would never roam

Flannel Song: Down by the Bay

"Down By the Bay" by Raffi

Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow,
Back to my home, I dare not go,
For if I do, my mother will say...
"Did you ever see a goose, kissing a moose,
Down by the bay?"

Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow,
Back to my home, I dare not go,
For if I do, my mother will say...
"Did you ever see a whale, with a polka dot tail,
Down by the bay?"

Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow,

Back to my home, I dare not go,
For if I do, my mother will say...
"Did you ever see a fly, wearing a tie,
Down by the bay?"

Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow,
Back to my home, I dare not go,
For if I do, my mother will say...
"Did you ever see a bear, combing his hair,
Down by the bay?"

Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow,
Back to my home, I dare not go,
For if I do, my mother will say...
"Did you ever see llamas, eating their pajamas,
Down by the bay?"

Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow,
Back to my home, I dare not go,
For if I do, my mother will say...
"Did you ever have a time, when you couldn't make a rhyme,
Down by the bay?"

Flannel Activity: Cupcake Match

This is a fun activity to incorporate into a baking or food themed storytime!

I had out the tops of the cupcakes and have the kids and parents count how many sprinkles they have. Then I put up the bottoms and have the kids bring up the matching top.  If I have 20 kids, I hand out tops and bottoms to kids so everyone can participate.

Movement Time: Parachute with teddy bears

We tossed all our teddys on the parachute and went up and down while singing "The Bear Went Over the Mountain"

The bear went over the mountain,
The bear went over the mountain,
The bear went over the mountain,
To see what he could see,
To see what he could see,
To see what he could see...

The other side of the mountain,
The other side of the mountain,
The other side of the mountain,
Was all that he could see…
Was all that he could see,
Was all that he could see,
The other side of the mountain,
Was all that he could see!

El oso subió a la montaña
El oso subió a la montaña
El oso subió a la montaña
A ver qué podía ver
A ver qué podía ver
A ver qué podía ver

El otro lado de la montaña
El otro lado de la montaña
El otro lado de la montaña
Fue todo lo que pudo ver
Fue todo lo que pudo ver
Fue todo lo que pudo ver.
El otro lado de la montaña
Fue todo lo que pudo ver.
